First heard of this man from a piano book I have. Have been looking over his stuff. He's a great piano player, able to play the right notes and melodies...with a feelin.

Fantastic post, thanks. I love all types of music. Blues and Jazz are my tops. OP is such a talented guy. Thanks again.

He was simply remarkable, greatest jazz musician to come from Canada.

No problem. I caught a bit of a jazz bug last weekend, of course it all started when I found Kind Of Blue and wanted to see what it was like...

Did not know he was Canadian.
Porridge is oatmeal here. When my friends from Alberta would order porridge in southern California and Arizona, they would tell them they did not have porridge, then I told them to order oatmeal. So close, yet some significant cultural differences. :)

Great video, excellent overview of the different piano styles.
I love jazz and Oscar Peterson. I also really like these old Dick Cavett interviews, he gives his guest so much time to talk.
McCoy Tyner is one of my other favorite piano players.

Kind of Blue is one of the greatest albums of all time, but it might be one of the absolute worst albums to listen to in a car. There is so much whitespace and extended quiet sections; you lose so much of the subtlety with any engine/road noise.

I can understand this "good in the quiet bad on the road" situation. Another legendary album I could think of that could be drowned out by engine noise would be Dark Side Of The Moon ; especially "Speak To Me", "Great Gig In The Sky" and "Us And Them". It's the quiet instrumental pieces that a car engine drowns out, and so you don't really experience the album as much.

I found it interesting that he manages to play the different styles so effectively, as if they were his own.

I don't know if you'd call it Jazz, but I adore The Cinematic Orchestra.

Other great music of Miles was in the French movie 'Ascenseur pour l'échaud' ('Elevator to the Gallows' in USA), 1958. Which all you opponauts should know for the appearance of a Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing. And for Davis' sound: the loneliest trumpet sound you will ever hear, and the model for sad-core music ever since. Hear it and weep.
If you're into guitar-jazz try Wolfgang Muthspiel's 'Black & Blue'.

In Kisii, Kenya, porridge is made from millet and extremely rarely from oats....so calling it oatmeal there would be a misnomer.

I thought you were speaking about Canada. Where are you?

Kisii, Kenya.

Now look what you've made me do. Listen to jazz all day.
Anyway, I found this video and was laughing myself silly by the end. As a pianist, I find this amazing:
